Student teachers in Zimbabwe are celebrating wildly after the government hiked their allowances from a measly US$1.50 per month to US$90 per month. The student teachers will also receive a Covid-19 risk allowance of US$75 per month.
This windfall will take their total earnings to an equivalent of US$165 per month, a massive increase from the US$1.50 per month that they were earning before.
The increase in allowances is with effect from April 2021. Before that, the student teachers were earning ZWL$157 per month, which is approximately US$1.50.
Below is the communiqué from Public Services Commission secretary, Jonathan Wutawunashe, announcing the new allowances.
